Introduction

The Google AI Engineer interview runs 5 to 6 rounds and takes 6 to 8 weeks from first recruiter contact to final decision. The process screens for algorithmic coding ability, applied ML knowledge, production system design, and cultural alignment with Google’s engineering values. Every stage is standardized across teams, with interviewers submitting scorecards to a hiring committee that makes the final call.

The Google Interview Process

1

Recruiter Screen

A 20 to 30 minute call covering your background, current role, and interest in Google. Not technical. Candidates report recruiters are checking ML production experience specifically in 2026, not just whether you know algorithms. One candidate noted: “They asked about dataset sizes and model latency improvements right in the first call. Come with numbers.” Based on candidate reports

Online Assessment

A 60 to 90 minute timed coding test, typically 2 algorithm problems. Easy to medium difficulty. Some AI-focused roles include a short ML component. Candidates report this stage is being phased out for certain roles but still appears for new grads and high-volume hiring cycles. Based on candidate reports

Technical Phone Screen

45 to 60 minutes of live coding on Google Docs, no syntax highlighting. One or two algorithm problems, medium to hard. Candidates report the interviewer is collaborative and will hint if you’re stuck, but expects you to drive. ML questions on feature engineering, regularization, and model trade-offs also appear here. Based on candidate reports

Virtual Onsite Loop

Four interviews across one or two days. Typically: two coding rounds, one ML system design, one behavioral. Candidates describe the ML system design round as the hardest, focused on production concerns like serving latency, embedding storage, and model monitoring. One candidate said: “They don’t want theory. They want to know how you’d actually ship it.” Based on candidate reports

Hiring Committee Review

Your interviewers submit detailed scorecards. A hiring committee of senior engineers reviews all feedback and calibrates your level (L3 to L6). Candidates report you’ll hear back within a week of the loop. Based on candidate reports
