I went through three rounds for the Data Scientist role at PayPal, and the first thing that stood out was how balanced the process was between coding, ML thinking, and project depth. The first interview was pretty straightforward technically: it focused on DSA and SQL, and in the version I had scheduled as a two-part technical screen, there was one Python question and one SQL question at an easy-to-moderate level. Nothing felt overly tricky, but they did want clean reasoning and solid fundamentals rather than just getting to a working answer quickly.
The second round was the most distinctive one for me because it was an ML system design conversation end to end. I had to walk through the whole pipeline from data preparation to model deployment, so it was less about memorizing algorithms and more about whether I could think through the practical tradeoffs in building a real machine learning system. After that, the final round was a deep dive into my past projects. They pushed hard on the reasoning behind each decision I had made, not just what I built. That part felt very conversational, but also probing, because they kept asking why I chose one approach over another and what I would change if I had to do it again.
Overall, the process felt structured and fair, with the later rounds getting more open-ended and experience-driven. I ended up getting an offer, and I would say the biggest thing to prepare for is being able to explain your project decisions clearly and defend the full lifecycle of an ML solution, not just the model itself.
