Chevron's software engineering interviews lean toward behavioral depth over algorithmic difficulty. Across reports from internship, full-time Software Engineer, and Cloud Engineer candidates, most interview time goes to STAR-format behavioral questions drawn from the resume. These include walking through past projects such as a hackathon challenge, describing conflicts with teammates or supervisors, and, for one candidate, explaining how prior projects connect to Chevron's business goals. When technical questions show up, they tend to be short and conversational rather than whiteboard-style. Candidates reported a palindrome string check, finding duplicates in an array, list sorting and array questions, and a base-10-to-base-2 conversion, alongside general CS fundamentals. The reported technical questions were described as easy-level. Candidates noted that interviewers cared more about hearing their thought process than seeing an optimized solution.
Process structure varies by role and track. Some candidates described a single combined interview covering behavioral and technical material in about an hour. One intern had a behavioral first interview with two engineers, followed about two weeks later by a Teams follow-up split between behavioral and technical questions. A Cloud Engineer candidate went through an HR screen and then a technical and behavioral panel of about five people. One full-time candidate reported an SHL online assessment with aptitude, technical multiple-choice, and personality sections before a technical interview and a final HR round. Given this range, prepare concrete STAR stories tied to your own projects and practice explaining simple coding problems out loud. Stay flexible for either a quick single session or a longer multi-stage process.

Real interview reports from people who went through the Chevron process.
I went through quite a few rounds with Chevron, which was a pretty involved process overall. It started with an initial phone screening with HR, where they asked basic questions about my resume and background. That felt pretty straightforward — mostly getting to know me and making sure there was a general fit before moving forward.
After waiting about a week, I got called in for the main technical round at their office. This is where things got more serious. I met with a technical panel of three people from the department I'd be working in, and they spent considerable time assessing both my technical capabilities and whether I'd be a good cultural fit for the team. The questions were heavily behavioral and experience-focused rather than coding problems. They asked me to walk through specific projects I'd worked on, dive into challenges I'd overcome that I was proud of, and talk through how I'd handle high-pressure situations. The interviewers were patient and genuinely interested in understanding my problem-solving approach and work style — they seemed more focused on finding someone who could think deeply and collaborate well than on trick questions or algorithms.
Because the role involved relocation, the process was fairly extensive. They eventually flew me out to their training center for additional interviews and required extensive medical evaluations as part of the onboarding. By that point, it was clear this was a serious investment on both sides. The whole experience felt professional and respectful — the interviewers really did seem like deep thinkers who cared about building the right team. In the end, I received an offer.
Prep tip from this candidate
Chevron's process emphasizes behavioral depth and company fit heavily — prepare detailed project stories that showcase problem-solving and resilience, especially examples where you overcame significant challenges. They're more interested in how you think and work under pressure than in coding problems, so focus on demonstrating patience, resourcefulness, and collaborative instincts.

Some candidates first connected with Chevron through a career fair or a resume submission. A recruiter then reached out to schedule the first interview, in one case for the very next day. One candidate described a brief resume screen and a friendly recruiter call before the main interview.
A Cloud Engineer candidate described an initial HR interview covering background, experience, and education. A full-time Software Engineer candidate instead reported an online assessment on the SHL platform with aptitude questions, technical multiple-choice CS fundamentals, and a lengthy personality section, which they found tougher than expected.
Nearly every candidate describes this stage, either as a single combined session or as a distinct round. Interviewers ask STAR-format behavioral questions drawn from the resume, covering teamwork, conflict with a supervisor or colleague, and challenges overcome, then add a light technical component. Reported technical prompts include a palindrome check, array duplicates, list sorting and arrays, and a base conversion. None were described as requiring deep algorithmic work.
A Cloud Engineer candidate described a panel of about five people, including a scrum master, subject-matter experts, and the manager. The panel drew mostly behavioral questions from a categorized list and kept the technical component light. One intern instead had a follow-up Teams interview about two weeks after the first, split between behavioral questions and a short technical portion.
One full-time candidate described a final HR round that repeated earlier questions about background, projects, and teamwork, which they found repetitive by that point. Other candidates did not report a separate final round.
