Candidates' accounts of the Mastercard Software Engineer interview vary by team and level, so treat any single format as one possibility. One candidate who received an offer describes an initial screening call followed by three roughly hour-long technical rounds on the same day, covering system design, code review and business modeling. A senior candidate describes a technical round, a bar raiser, a technical subject-matter expert (SME) round, a manager round and an HR round. Both describe the conversations as discussion-heavy rather than trick-question-heavy, with time spent on past projects and the reasoning behind your choices.
Java and backend topics come up most often. Candidates mention basic Java questions, Java 8, 17 and 21 features, the Stream API, REST and API design, design patterns and SOLID principles, Spring Boot Security, API Gateway, AWS Lambda basics, and authentication standards such as OAuth 2.0, OIDC and SAML. One candidate was also asked about their React experience.
Coding is not absent. Reports include a graph traversal variation in a live coding round and a Roman numeral problem. An internship candidate faced two DSA questions in an online assessment, followed by object-oriented design questions whose requirements kept expanding. Interviewers cared about communication: narrate your approach, ask clarifying questions and mention edge cases. Behavioral prompts cover conflict, teamwork and favorite projects, and one senior candidate describes mostly STAR-style questions in the manager round.
For some roles, the content looked different. One candidate describes an assessment focused on C fundamentals followed by high-level project discussions. Confirm the exact role and level with your recruiter early, since one candidate reports confusion about both. Prepare to explain your own projects clearly, including the trade-offs you made.

Candidates report an opening screen. Descriptions include an initial call that filtered for basic technical knowledge, an easy LeetCode-style technical screen, and online assessments on C fundamentals or two DSA questions. The format likely depends on the team and role.
Some candidates report a live coding round with a senior engineer or team member, lasting about 30 to 40 minutes in one case. Reported content includes a practical coding task, a twist on a graph traversal problem and a Roman numeral problem. Candidates say communication mattered: narrate your approach, ask clarifying questions and mention edge cases.
One candidate describes three technical rounds of about an hour each on the same day, covering system design, code review and business modeling. A senior candidate describes a bar raiser on design patterns, SOLID and debugging, then an SME round on REST, API design, Spring Boot Security, AWS Lambda and authentication. An intern candidate reports object-oriented design questions that kept expanding.
Candidates report behavioral questions on conflict, disagreement with a colleague, teamwork and a favorite project. One senior candidate describes mostly STAR-style questions with a project deep dive in the manager round. Prepare concrete examples with your specific actions.
Some candidates report a final HR round, and one senior candidate says it covered salary negotiation and general discussion. Outcomes in these reports are mixed, including offers and rejections. One candidate was asked to redo a technical interview for a different level, so confirm the role early.
