Genentech's AI Research Scientist interviews center on your own research rather than algorithm puzzles. Across six reported loops spanning intern, scientist, senior scientist, and postdoctoral fellow tracks, the process usually opens with a screening conversation, sometimes with a hiring manager and sometimes with a talent agent. It covers your graduate research and how it fits the specific project or team. One AI Research Scientist candidate described this screen as a mutual fit check before either side committed to moving forward.
From there, most candidates move into a block of one-on-one conversations with individual team members. Reported counts vary: one AI Research Scientist candidate went through four separate one-on-ones, another went through six, and a Senior Scientist candidate had five 30-minute conversations. These sessions center on research papers, methodology, and how a candidate's work connects to the team's problems, sometimes mixed with behavioral questions about collaboration.
The step most candidates describe is a formal research seminar or presentation given to a wider audience. Reported lengths run from about 40 minutes to a full hour. One Senior Scientist candidate presented to roughly eight people from different departments, who asked detailed methodological questions and how they would approach the team's problems with orthogonal or novel methods. Another AI Research Scientist candidate described a final round presenting to the broader team and fielding open questions from the room.
Process shape still shifts by level. One AI Research Intern candidate had only a single 30-minute research discussion before receiving an offer. A Postdoctoral Fellow candidate described a full virtual interview day of roughly eight hours, including a seminar talk, group Q&A, and one-on-one conversations with potential mentors, current postdocs, and the program coordinator. One candidate also reported a separate HR conversation about salary, held after the hiring-manager discussion and before the research rounds.
