ASML builds software that ranges from real-time embedded control code to enterprise applications, and engineers work in scrum teams where new features must fit an existing architecture and stay maintainable. The interview reflected that: it tested how you think about code, not how fast you solve puzzles.
The candidate describes an initial phone screen followed by three rounds: a written assessment, a technical interview and a conversation with the hiring manager. The whole process took about a month, and HR explained each step clearly. The candidate received an offer.
The technical round was the centerpiece, and it centered on code review and design analysis rather than algorithm problems. The candidate was shown code examples and asked to analyze them. Questions covered SOLID principles, garbage collection and reference counting, and how to document and maintain code in a real codebase. The written assessment covered similar ground, including software design and how you would approach a code review.
The candidate felt the interviewers cared more about clear reasoning on design tradeoffs than about perfect answers, and they were comfortable when the candidate worked through something unfamiliar. The manager conversation was mostly culture fit and logistics.
This is a single account, so treat the details as one data point and confirm the steps with your recruiter. For prep, practice reviewing unfamiliar code out loud, explaining why a design is or isn't maintainable, and refreshing how memory management and reference counting work.

The process felt pretty straightforward, but it was more technical than I expected from the first screen. I started with a HireVue-style video interview that was mostly behavioral, with pre-recorded questions and a set time limit to answer. There were about 10 questions, and I had unlimited time in between to think through my responses. Most of them were about my background, what I had done in past projects, why I was interested in the role, and what I could contribute. One question I remember clearly was about my favorite course in university, so they definitely wanted to see how I talked about my experience rather than just checking boxes.
After that, I had a single 1-on-1 technical interview that ran about an hour to an hour and a half. That round was much more focused on the resume and the work I had actually listed, so I’d say you need to know your own projects really well and be ready to go deep on anything you mention. In my case, I was asked to explain how I would model an electron detector in a simulation environment, which made it clear they were testing both technical understanding and how I approached problem solving. There were also some fundamentals mixed in, along with behavioral questions about teamwork, handling feedback, and challenging situations. One of the more classic technical questions was about where the maximum bending stress occurs in a cantilever beam with a point load at the free end, so the interview wasn’t purely software-focused even though the role was software engineering. I ended up getting the offer, and my main takeaway was to prepare for a resume-driven technical conversation and not assume the first round would stay purely behavioral.
Prep tip from this candidate
Be ready to defend every project on your resume in detail, since the technical round leaned heavily on prior work. Also practice explaining fundamentals clearly, including basic mechanics-style questions and how you’d model a system in simulation, because those came up alongside behavioral prompts.

The candidate reports an initial phone screen before the three formal rounds began. HR then walked the candidate through each following step with clear communication. The account gives few details about the screen itself, so prepare a concise explanation of your background and why you want the role.
The candidate describes an early written assessment that tested conceptual ground such as software design and how to approach code review. It felt more about demonstrating thoughtfulness than speed or memorization. Practice explaining design decisions clearly and in writing.
The candidate was shown code examples and asked to review and analyze them rather than solve algorithm problems from scratch. Questions covered SOLID principles, garbage collection, reference counting, and documenting and maintaining code. The candidate felt that reasoning through tradeoffs mattered more than a perfect answer.
The final round was a conversation with the hiring manager. The candidate described it as mostly culture fit and logistics rather than another technical grilling, with a collaborative tone. Be ready to explain what draws you to the team and how you work with others. The candidate received an offer.
