The positions involve work in the catchment areas of Dickenson and Wise Counties to provide diagnostic autism assessments, offer trainings/consultations to area educators, and to conduct effectiveness research on rural capacity building of autism services. Mentorship will be provided by the director of the VT Autism Clinic & Center for Autism Research in Blacksburg, Va. This fellowship will provide a unique experience by working on-site in far southwest Virginia with Cooperative Extension and school-based providers while also building confidence and gaining experience working with a long-established autism clinic and research facility, it's graduate student clinicians, director and affiliated faculty. VTAC/CAR's mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with autism and their families through intervention, education, and research directed towards effective treatments and supports. The clinic, situated in Central Appalachia, provides a rich environment for those interested in pursuing a career in clinical work and research and provides opportunities to work in Health Professional Shortage Areas. This opportunity can also include supervisory experiences needed for psychology licensure. Additional participation in research development, study design/implementation, and publication is also available, based on the candidate's career goals and level of experience. Ideal candidates for these positions will have a strong background in diagnostic assessments and evidence-based intervention approaches for individuals on the autism spectrum. The hired candidate will ideally work from a VCE location in Dickenson County, VA, and attend meetings online/remotely, with paid travel to Blacksburg a few times each semester, although other work location options can be considered. Candidates are expected to effectively collaborate with members of an interdisciplinary team, which will also include public school staff, children/adolescents and their families/caregivers. The Virginia Tech Clinical Science program is dually accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS) and received the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies' (ABCT) Outstanding Training Program award in 2017. The positions are for one or two years. Required Qualifications Multiple positions and levels available. All positions require the following: - PhD/PsyD/or equivalent doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology, School Psychology, or a related discipline from an accredited academic program. - Experience in working with individuals on the autism spectrum, including those with a wide range of behavioral presentations - Effective communicator with excellent interpersonal skills - Able to work independently as well as with a group - Detail oriented - Ability to manage multiple tasks - Exceptional time-management skills - Ability to resolve issues in a timely manner and ensure smooth data collection - A commitment to supporting a welcoming, affirming and inclusive climate For postdoctoral associates: -Doctoral degree must be awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of appointment with a minimum of one year eligibility remaining For senior research associate: -Doctoral degree with some prior postdoctoral experience. For research scientist: -Doctoral degree and significant experience. -Experience serving as a principal investigator in a research environment and demonstrated leadership in developing and executing research programs. The Institute has a long-term contractual relationship with the County to support the implementation of multiple child welfare programs in that jurisdiction. The individual in this role is expected to track changes in relevant federal, state and local legislation, policy and rules in this substantive domain and to assess their likely purport for the County in a timely way. The FRU Research Scientist for the Virginia Tech Institute for Policy and Governance (VTIPG) contributions to conceptualization and conduct of research projects, serves as principal investigator and develops or contributes significantly to research project design, implementation and interpretation. This position is frequently involved in preparation of proposals, reports, publications, and presentation of research results. Additionally, the successful candidate will carry out independent research in the field of child welfare policy under limited supervision.
