A discrete random variable is a function $X:\Omega\rightarrow\mathbb{Z}$. In practical terms, $X$ measures "how much" of some quantity results from some event $E$ in the sample space $\Omega$. For example, $X$ might associate the event "getting two heads and one tail" with the number $2$ to measure the number of heads we get from all of our flips of a coin.
